How to install a duvet cover.

Used in luxury hotels and homes throughout the world, duvet covers are now universally recognized as the most easy-care bedding option for the home. Here are a few reasons why duvet covers have gained international popularity:

  • Without a fill inside, most duvet covers are machine-washable and protect an un-washable or dry-clean-only comforter.
  • Changing the warmth of your bedding without changing the look of your room is as simple as switching out your comforter for different seasons.
  • The bed is the largest statement piece in your bedroom. Changing the duvet cover is the easiest and often the most affordable way to give the bedroom a fresh new look.
  • When folded and stored for future use, duvet covers take up little space in the linen closet.

While caring for a duvet cover is easy, changing a duvet cover can be a bit of a hassle to the beginner. Changing a duvet cover is not unlike putting a pillowcase onto a pillow, except for the fact that a duvet doesn’t have the firmness of a pillow and it tends to twist inside the cover. While changing a duvet can be a challenge, there are a couple changing methods that can ease the process, especially if you’re working alone.

Changing The Duvet The Traditional Way

  1. Lay the comforter flat on the bed so that its all spread out.
  2. Turn the duvet cover inside out.
  3. With the duvet turned inside out, reach through the opening of the duvet cover with both hands and grab the top two corners. Once you have a hold of the corners of the cover, grab the two bottom corners of the comforter. (if there are fastners to secure the comforter to the duvet cover do so now. ie: tie strings, buttons, etc.)
  4. Shake the duvet cover onto the comforter.
    • Be sure to hold on tight as you shake the duvet cover onto the comforter. This will help ensure that all corners of the duvet are spread out to all corners inside the duvet cover.
    • Powerfully shake the comforter and duvet cover to work it all the way oveer the comforter.
    • You can also stand on the edge of the bed and hold the top two corners of the comforter and duvet cover, to evenly shake the cover over the comforter.
    • You may have to pull the last portion of the cover over the bottom of the comforter and tuck in the corners.
  5. Fasten the inside closeures on the bottom to secure the comforter to the cover. Once the inside closures are secure, you can close the duvet cover opening at the foot of the bed.
  6. Spread the duvet onto the bed and enjoy!

Changing The Duvet Using the Roll Method

  1. Turn the duvet cover inside out. Once the duvet cover is inside out, hold onto the corners and shake it a bit to spread the cover out over the bed. Be sure that the duvet cover opening is at the foot of the bed.
  2. Fully spread out the comforter on top of the duvet cover. Make sure the comforter corners align neatly with the duvet cover corners. If your comforter and duvet cover have fasteners on the corners to keep the comforter corners secured into the corners of the duvet cover, attach those now.
  3. From the top of the bed, roll the comforter and duvet cover down to the end of the bed.
  4. Once completely rolled at the foot of the bed, put your hand in the duvet cover opening, and grab the entire rolled side portion of your comforter and duvet cover. Flip the side of the duvet cover over the side portion you are still holding onto. Once the duvet cover is flipped over the one side of the roll, do the exact same thing on the other side of the roll. When both sides of the roll have been flipped and are covered by the sides of the duvet cover, even out the rest of the comforter. Flip the middle portion of the duvet cover over the middle portion of the comforter.
  5. Unroll the comforter and duvet cover back up toward the top of the bed. Fasten the opening of the duvet cover either by buttoning or zipping the cover flaps together. Shake out the corners and sides of the comforter to flatten out and bunched up areas.
